Meredith, you're fabulously insightful, especially for an Art & Architecture Research & Instruction Librarian. I am so incredibly pleased and grateful you're here.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! I'm old enough that I completed undergrad before PPT took over the classroom, and I wax nostalgic about the days back when being able to take notes was a finely honed SKILL.

But seriously... As a librarian, the worst instruction sessions I've ever seen involved PPT. When used appropriately, it can be a powerful tool. But mostly it just makes the presenter seem infinitely more boring.

Your usage of the term "crutch" is spot on. I think PPT often replaces time spent prepping for the lecture, thinking about teaching/learning strategies, and creating coherent/elegant/persuasive lectures.

I think we all need to take a step back and remember what PPT started out as: a tool for "pitches" in the business world. Teaching is not a sales pitch, and it shouldn't be treated as such--something that needs to be simplified, distilled, and made to fit into bullet points.
